AI developer Harrison.ai is expanding its business model by supporting a teleradiology venture called Frontier Radiology that’s scaling up and hiring radiologists. But the move drew unwanted attention from a critical article in the Australian news media this week.
Harrison is best known for its suite of AI algorithms for both radiology and pathology applications, as well as its Harrison.Rad 1.5 foundation model that can draft reports for radiologist review.
- Harrison is based in Australia, but has recently made the U.S. market a major focus, with co-founder and CEO Dimitry Tran relocating to California to spearhead the initiative.
But it was Harrison’s newfound U.S. focus that apparently drew the attention of ABC News, an Australian news outlet that on September 7 published a critical article that questioned the company’s moves, in particular its involvement with Frontier Radiology.
- One bone of contention in the story was whether Harrison’s U.S. emphasis was appropriate given the Australian government’s 2025 investment of US$23M in the company. The story also claimed Harrison was planning layoffs of Australian staff and that its integration of AI with Frontier’s clinical services could be a conflict of interest.
But in an interview with The Imaging Wire, Dimitry Tran clarified Harrison’s strategic direction and its involvement with Frontier Radiology.
- Tran noted that Frontier is owned and operated by a radiologist – Joshua Ewell, DO – in accordance with U.S. rules requiring physician ownership of entities providing clinical services.
Ewell’s LinkedIn profile says Frontier will be an “AI-native radiology group” built entirely around AI foundation models.
- Harrison is providing Frontier with non-clinical services, including its suite of AI algorithms, which are already helping Frontier teleradiologists achieve industry-leading report turnaround times. But Frontier radiologists are free to use any AI solutions they wish – including those of Harrison’s competitors.
Tran noted that close cooperation between AI developers and imaging services providers is hardly unusual anymore in radiology.
- Indeed, two of the specialty’s largest U.S. providers – Radiology Partners and RadNet – have formed their own AI divisions to provide algorithms to both their own radiologists and outside customers.
The ABC News article conflated a number of recent developments into a narrative that doesn’t reflect reality, Tran believes.
- For example, the layoffs that occurred earlier this year at Harrison were connected to the company’s transition from an aggressive R&D phase into a commercialization push and weren’t related to Harrison’s U.S. entry.
And the Australian government’s funding was part of an investment that gave it a single-digit equity stake in the company – a stake it retains to this day and that will prove increasingly profitable with Harrison’s growing success.
- Even as it supports Frontier, Harrison plans to continue its focus on AI algorithm development and commercialization, especially of the Harrison.Rad foundation model – while keeping the “vast majority” of its employees in Australia.
The Takeaway
Putting aside the ABC article’s negative spin, Harrison’s move into teleradiology offers an intriguing twist on the growing integration between AI and imaging services providers. Given ongoing workforce shortages and rising imaging volume, it’s perhaps the best way to move the chains toward finding relief for beleaguered radiologists.

- AI to Monitor AI: If you’re looking for a simple and cost-effective way to monitor the performance of your AI algorithms, maybe the best way to do it … is with AI. A new paper in JACR describes how it’s possible with the ACR’s Assess-AI registry. Researchers compared AI outputs for different clinical use cases to reference standards extracted from radiology reports using large language models (LLMs). The paper is worth checking out just for the co-authors, who include some of the biggest names in AI and imaging IT.
- Radiologists as AI Product Managers? A new article in EJR asks a thought-provoking question: Are radiologists evolving into AI product managers who are guiding adoption of the technology in healthcare? The essay notes that radiology’s early embrace of AI has many radiologists evaluating new technologies, integrating AI tools into workflows, and monitoring performance – tasks that go beyond image interpretation into areas typically handled by product managers.
- FDA’s Breakthrough Device Update: The FDA issued an update to its list of medical devices granted Breakthrough Device designation. Through the third quarter of fiscal 2026 (ending June 30), the FDA granted Breakthrough Device status to 116 devices, compared to 164 for all of 2025. Over the program’s full history, 1,320 devices received the designation, of which 55 (4%) were radiology products, with higher percentages coming from cardiology (20%) and neurology (15%). In all, 210 Breakthrough Devices have gone on to receive FDA marketing authorization.
- GE Files for SPECT/CT Clearance: GE HealthCare is looking to up its game in nuclear medicine by filing for 510(k) clearance of the newest offering in its StarGuide family of SPECT/CT systems based on cadmium zinc telluride (CZT) digital detectors. StarGuide GX is designed to deliver twice the system volume sensitivity of older systems while preserving high-resolution imaging, enabling it to acquire more data in shorter acquisition times. It also includes NVIDIA RTX graphics technology for improved image reconstruction, while its dual-collimator detector speeds collimator exchange.
- Who’s Following Up with Lung Screening? A study in JTO Clinical and Research Reports showed only 29% of patients with positive Lung-RADS results, those in category 3 or 4, got follow-up CT scans on time. Patients with less-concerning initial results had longer intervals for follow-up, but lower adherence (22%). Those with COPD were about 1.2X more likely to adhere across both the high- and low-risk groups, while Black individuals and frail patients in the low-risk group had 13% and 12% lower rates of timely follow-up, respectively.
- CT Radiation Dose Rose During COVID: A new study in EJR found that emergency CT radiation dose rose during the COVID-19 pandemic – and then stayed high afterward. In a review of 375k patients scanned from 2018 to 2023 at a German university hospital, the number of CT scans per 100 patients rose 6% during the pandemic. Mean effective dose per CT scan rose 20%, leading to a 28% rise in effective dose per ED patient. Neither trend fell after the pandemic, suggesting “lasting change” in ED CT utilization.
- Radiation-Shielding Skin Cream: Could better radiation protection be as simple as putting on sunscreen? Researchers in China describe a skin cream they developed that has radioprotective qualities and could be used by personnel with occupational radiation exposure, like interventional radiology staff. In tests with in vitro models, the cream had a shielding efficiency of 90% against strontium-90 beta radiation and 76% against X-rays, while in mouse models it reduced radiation-induced mortality and skin injury. The cream could complement traditional shielding for protecting against scatter radiation.
- West Physics Acquires NY Testing Firm: Radiation safety and medical physics consulting firm West Physics Consulting expanded its footprint in the U.S. Northeast by acquiring Radiographic Testing Services (RTS) of Albany, New York. RTS provides diagnostic and nuclear medicine testing in central New York, and the acquisition will give West Physics an additional field office in the region as it expands nationally.
- Why 5T MRI? United Imaging raised eyebrows when it introduced the uMR Jupiter 5T MRI scanner at ECR 2023, occupying a field strength between 3T and 7T systems. But a new review article in Magnetic Medicine outlines some of the clinical advantages of 5T MRI, which the authors said “offers a pragmatic balance” between the superior signal-to-noise ratio of 7T MRI and the wider clinical availability of 3T MRI. Five-tesla MRI also avoids some of 7T’s disadvantages, like “severe B1 inhomogeneity” and concerns around specific absorption rate in human body tissue.
- Heartvue’s AI Imaging Clearance: Heartvue.ai earned its first FDA 510(k) clearance, for the company’s AI-enabled cardiovascular MRI software. Heartvue.Proton streamlines measurement and analysis of 2D linear dimensions, ventricular volumes and ejection fraction, and blood flow while still giving physicians the final say on reports. The application may not be the only time-saver here: The FDA clearance also included a Predetermined Change Control Plan, which allows Heartvue to update the software without having to submit another 510(k) application.
- Siemens Completes PET Expansion: Siemens Healthineers this week announced the completion of a $44M project to expand and renovate its PET Detector Center in Rockford, Tennessee. The project included renovations to existing space and added 40k square feet to the facility, which is the only global manufacturing site for the PET detectors used in Siemens’ PET/CT scanners. The expansion will enable the company to meet the growing demand for PET that’s being driven by increased use of theranostics.
- Another BCI Partnership Takes Shape: The budding brain-computer interface (BCI) segment continues to attract medical imaging companies. Butterfly Network will provide its Poseidon family of Ultrasound-on-Chip technology to Merge Labs to develop ultrasound-based BCI technology. Merge Labs launched in January 2026 with $252M in seed funding and will use Butterfly’s semiconductor-based technology as a foundation to develop its own custom neural interface technologies. This is Butterfly’s second bleeding-edge partnership, following its alliance with Midjourney earlier this year on an imaging spa concept.
