Is your imaging practice paying attention to the acquisition speed of your CT scans? A new study in AJR suggests that CT pulmonary angiography patients are being scanned at an average speed that’s 30% slower than optimal, resulting in unnecessary imaging artifacts.
CT is radiology’s workhorse modality, but recent studies have found wide variation in CT scanning parameters, sometimes between scanners in the same health system or even the same facility.
- This can result in patients getting different levels of radiation dose for the same type of study, or differences in image quality that can make image comparisons more difficult.
To even out the variation, imaging groups have proposed best-practice scanning protocols for different exams and anatomical regions.
- Most of these protocols focus on reducing radiation dose, but there are other elements – such as scan acquisition speed – that are also important.
For CT pulmonary angiography exams, scans that are performed too slowly run the risk of motion artifacts caused by patients breathing.
- Imaging sites, therefore, should try to optimize scan speed, which is determined by a mix of collimation, pitch, and gantry rotation time.
Researchers in the new study — from UC San Francisco and University of Wisconsin — found that many sites were using a fixed scan speed for CTPA regardless of patient characteristics.
- They analyzed data for 167k CTPA scans acquired from 2016 to 2021, with data coming from 121 sites using 28 different scanner models from various manufacturers.

- Scans on average were 30% slower than the best-practice speed.
- 87% of acquisitions were slower.
- 62% were more than 20% slower.
- Scan speeds varied widely by vendor and by scanner model.
Researchers concluded that CT sites weren’t optimizing their equipment and not implementing the fastest scan speeds available.
- As a result, they could be generating widespread motion artifacts, especially for smaller patients.
The Takeaway
The new findings show that radiation dose isn’t the only CT scanning parameter that needs optimization. Imaging practices should take a look at their CT protocols to ensure they have the optimal settings, especially for CTPA scans of smaller patients.

- Moving Beyond CT Lung Screening: Forget about CT lung screening – comprehensive CT chest screening could be the future. A new article in European Journal of Cancer proposes that rather than just focusing on lung cancer, CT could be used to screen for other chest ailments including emphysema and coronary artery calcification, a marker for cardiovascular disease risk. These three tobacco-related diseases account for 44% of global premature deaths, and screening combined with new software-based image analysis could detect disease earlier, when it’s easier to treat.
- Indian Woman Dies During MRI: A woman in India died during an MRI scan, allegedly because imaging personnel failed to recognize her implanted pacemaker and dialysis plug. The 61-year-old woman had been experiencing dizziness for several days and was referred for the scan but began to experience discomfort and is believed to have died during the study. A fatal MRI accident in India in 2018 – in which an oxygen cylinder was drawn into the scanning room and killed a patient – focused attention on MRI safety in the country.
- Study Advances BraCoil Concept: Austrian researchers developing a breast MRI coil that women wear like a bra for supine scanning reported new progress in a study in European Journal of Radiology. Researchers tested the 28-channel BraCoil with a 3T MRI scanner from Siemens Healthineers in 11 patients with 18 breast lesions, finding that lesion position on supine BraCoil images aligned better with supine breast ultrasound than did conventional prone breast MRI. A previous study showed BraCoil had higher signal-to-noise ratio than conventional breast MRI.
- Volpara Allies with CureMetrix: Lunit subsidiary Volpara Health signed an agreement with CureMetrix that gives its users access to CureMetrix’s cmAngio software for analyzing breast arterial calcifications. BACs are visible on mammograms and can be a marker for cardiovascular disease in women, turning mammograms into a two-for-one test for both breast cancer and heart disease. cmAngio is currently available to both Volpara and Lunit customers.
- Do Radiologists Have a Sixth Sense? A new study in Radiology comes to a fascinating conclusion: Radiologists can subconsciously recognize suspicious lung nodules on chest CT scans even if they don’t immediately diagnose them. Massachusetts researchers had six radiologists read 18 chest CT scans. They missed 59% of the nodules, but they looked longer at “missed” nodules than normal tissue (228 vs. 175 milliseconds) and also experienced larger pupil area (1.4k vs. 1.3k pixels). Tracking visual processes during reading sessions could improve radiologists’ diagnostic performance.
- Siemens Launches Mobile Stroke Unit Package: Siemens Healthineers has developed a technology package designed for mobile stroke units, which house CT scanners in ambulances to deliver faster imaging for stroke patients. Siemens customized its Somatom On.site dedicated head CT scanner with its Stroke Connect software to acquire point-of-care images that can be quickly transferred to hospitals for early diagnosis. The solution is being investigated at University Medical Centre Mannheim in Germany.
- RapidAI Touts Results vs. Viz: RapidAI is highlighting new results from a research study presented at last week’s International Stroke Conference that compared its algorithm for detecting large vessel occlusion to Viz.ai’s popular Viz LVO solution. In 1.6k patients, researchers in the DUEL study said Rapid LVO detected more LVO-positive cases than Viz LVO (98% vs. 74%), as well as more LVO-negative cases (94% vs. 91%).
- Viz Promotes Stroke Monitoring Data: Not to be outdone, Viz.ai countered with results from a new study published in The Neurohospitalist on the value of its Viz Connect pathway for post-stroke patient care. Viz Connect was designed to improve connection between stroke specialists and electrophysiologists, and the study showed reduced time to median device placement for insertable cardiac monitors (1 vs. 32 days) and external event monitors (9 vs. 22 days). Also, the number of patients receiving appropriate ICM placement before discharge increased 17X.
- Osteoporosis Screening from X-Rays: Foot and ankle X-rays can be used to screen people for osteoporosis with a deep learning algorithm as described in a paper in European Journal of Radiology. Researchers developed an AI model that analyzed X-rays and extracted features predictive of low bone mineral density. In a test set of 178 people, it had an AUC of 0.87, sensitivity of 90%, and specificity of 84%, showing it could be used to opportunistically identify candidates for DEXA scans even if they don’t meet established BMD screening criteria.
- Canon Healthcare Picks Cleveland HQ: Canon Medical Systems has picked a former IBM building in Cleveland as the headquarters for its Canon Healthcare USA subsidiary. Canon created Canon Healthcare at RSNA 2022 as a vehicle to strengthen its presence in the U.S., and cemented an R&D deal with Cleveland Clinic at RSNA 2023. Canon reportedly will invest $34M in purchasing and retrofitting the 43k-sq-ft building, which is located near the Cleveland Clinic’s main campus.
- Median Advances eyonis in Study: Median Technologies is reporting progress in its effort to commercialize its eyonis AI algorithm for CT lung cancer screening. The company said eyonis met the primary endpoint in the RELIVE study, showing that in 480 high-risk people who got screened, radiologists using the algorithm had better performance than radiologists working alone. The study completes the company’s clinical validation for eyonis, and Median expects to file FDA and CE Mark applications in Q2 2025. Median completed a funding round last month to support eyonis commercialization.
- Onc.AI Gets Breakthrough Nod: AI oncology developer Onc.AI received FDA breakthrough designation for Serial CTRS (Serial CT Response Score), a prognostic tool that analyzes routine CT scans to stratify patients with non-small cell lung cancer into categories of low or high risk of cancer mortality. Serial CTRS is the first of a pipeline of AI models for precision oncology.
- Bracco US Agent Gets Fast-Tracked: Another company getting a product on the FDA’s fast track is Bracco Imaging and its BR55 ultrasound contrast agent for detecting active bowel inflammation in Crohn’s disease. BR55 is an injectable perfluorobutane/nitrogen lipopeptide-coated microbubble agent that targets vascular endothelial growth factor receptor 2, a molecule that’s highly expressed in endothelial cells in areas of angiogenesis. The agent has completed phase 2 clinical trials.
- Wellumio Launches Low-Field MRI Trial: Ultra-low-field MRI developer Wellumio is launching a trial of its portable Axana 0.1T scanner in Australia. The study will focus on Axana’s ability to detect acute stroke in emergency patients using biomarkers like molecular diffusion using DWI sequences, and a Melbourne hospital recently performed its first scan with the system. The company last month announced its expansion into the U.S. in preparation for a commercial launch.
- Milvue Clearance for Trauma AI: French AI developer Milvue got FDA clearance for TechCare Trauma, the company’s solution for detecting musculoskeletal pathology like fractures on X-rays. The company said the algorithm was validated on 7k patients and had high accuracy across anatomical regions and patient demographics, including age and sex. Combined with its 2024 clearance for SmartChest, Milvue is now offering AI solutions for both bone and lung applications.
