Private equity acquisitions of radiology practices ticked up in 2024 after two years of declines. A new paper in JACR sheds light on PE purchases in radiology, which have raised concerns about the corporatization of medical imaging in the U.S.
Private-sector radiology historically consisted of independent imaging practices run largely by radiologist-owners who contracted with hospitals to read imaging exams.
- That model has begun to break down as radiology attracts investment from private equity investors eager to roll up what they see as a fragmented industry into larger companies that can leverage market power.
But what’s good for PE investors may not be good for radiologists – or for healthcare.

The new study documents the rate of private equity investment in radiology from 2013 to 2024, based on queries of the Pitchbook and CB Insights databases, finding …
- There were 113 PE-led radiology acquisitions over the full study period (out of a total of 4.3k radiology practices in the U.S. in 2023).
- PE radiology acquisitions peaked at 18 in 2021, fell for the next two years, and ticked back up to 10 in 2024.
- Most of the radiology practices being acquired employed 50-99 radiologists.
- PE-led acquisitions were most common in the South.
So what’s to make of the numbers? A total of 113 acquisitions over 10 years isn’t that many (although the authors caution that acquisitions of multi-state or national practices and imaging chains would be counted as a single deal).
- And the researchers acknowledge that there’s little data on the impact of corporatization on healthcare quality, at least in radiology (although they do cite a study showing that PE ownership was associated with an 8.2% increase in radiology prices).
The Takeaway
Private equity investment in radiology practices may still be in the early stages relative to other medical specialties, but radiologists will watch PE acquisitions closely for signs of how the trend may impact them. The new study serves as an important baseline for tracking future activity.

- ChatGPT Eases Radiology Reporting: Two new studies show how ChatGPT can assist radiologists in preparing reports. In a paper in Radiology, researchers used GPT-4 to detect errors in 10.3k head CT reports, finding the generative AI algorithm had 84% sensitivity for interpretive errors and 89% for factual mistakes. In a separate paper in AJR, researchers used GPT-3.5 and GPT-4 to automatically extract recommendations for additional imaging from free-text reports, finding good accuracy for modality, body part, and rationale (although GPT-4 had better performance).
- Do USPSTF Lung Screening Rules Fall Short? The USPSTF’s CT lung cancer screening criteria may not be capturing all the at-risk people who might benefit from scans. In a new study in Annals of Thoracic Surgery, researchers examined 7.2k patients diagnosed with lung cancer from 1992-2024, of whom 86% had some kind of smoking history. But only 46% met USPSTF’s 2021 criteria for screening, while other criteria would have captured more eligible individuals, suggesting that removing USPSTF’s “15 years since quitting” criterion might bring in more patients.
- CT Detects Cafeteria Worker Lung Changes: CT was used to detect lung changes in long-term cafeteria workers in a new paper published in Safety and Health at Work. Researchers in South Korea performed low-dose CT lung scans in 88 people with over 10 years of exposure to cooking oil fumes, finding a higher prevalence of pulmonary nodules versus an unexposed group (75% vs. 33%), as well as other trends like thicker bronchial walls. The findings suggest lung screening should be extended to at-risk groups beyond smoking status.
- FDA Clears Bunkerhill AVC: Bunkerhill Health achieved FDA clearance for its Bunkerhill AVC AI solution that detects and quantifies aortic valve calcification from non-gated, non-contrast chest CT scans performed for routine non-cardiac exams (e.g. accidents). Bunkerhill AVC is the first FDA-cleared algorithm of its kind, and follows the company’s iCAC solution for opportunistically screening chest CT exams for signs of coronary artery calcium.
- Photon-Counting CT for Obstructive CAD: Recent study results suggest photon-counting CT could be better at diagnosing obstructive CAD than conventional energy-integrating CT. Researchers retrospectively compared 7.8k patients who underwent CCTA using both technologies and found that photon-counting CT led to fewer subsequent invasive coronary angiographies (9.9% vs. 13.1%) with better specificity (98% vs. 93%), positive predictive value (83% vs. 63%), and diagnostic accuracy (97% vs. 93%). However, photon-counting CT patients referred for angiography were more likely to undergo revascularization.
- Philips Partners with Myocardial Solutions: Philips cemented a partnership with Myocardial Solutions that integrates the companies’ technologies to detect early signs of cardiotoxicity for patients getting cancer treatments. The combination of Philips’ Fast-SENC rapid MRI acquisition sequence with Myocardial Solutions’ MyoStrain analysis tool enables rapid generation of reports on heart strain and dysfunction, typically in 10 minutes. The combined solution will be available on Philips’ recently launched BlueSeal helium-free MRI scanner.
- Ultrasound AI Detects Fetal Defects: BrightHeart’s AI algorithm for analyzing fetal ultrasound scans helped clinicians detect congenital heart defects. In a study presented at the Society for Maternal-Fetal Medicine meeting, BrightHeart’s analysis of 2D grayscale ultrasound exams improved the ROC AUC of clinicians reading 200 exams (0.97 vs. 0.83), as well as sensitivity (0.94 vs. 0.78) and specificity (0.97 vs. 0.76), while median reading times were also shorter (226 vs. 274 seconds). BrightHeart got its first FDA clearance last year.
- Butterfly’s $76M Stock Offering: Add handheld ultrasound developer Butterfly Network to the list of radiology companies raising money. The firm is issuing $76M in common stock to fund the development and commercialization of new and existing products, as well as for general corporate purposes. Butterfly is also touting a recent study in which use of its POCUS scanner for cardiopulmonary patients admitted for shortness of brief without an identifiable cause produced shorter lengths of stay (5.6 vs. 6.7 days) and 50% lower hospital costs for low-acuity patients.
- Siemens Licenses SPECT CZT Tech: Siemens Healthineers inked a deal with Kromek Group of the U.K. to license Kromek’s technology for producing cadmium zinc telluride digital detectors for SPECT cameras. The agreement will enable Siemens to bring CZT production in-house as it looks to develop a line of gamma ray detectors for future SPECT systems. Siemens said its CZT efforts will run in parallel with continued development of sodium iodide-based gamma camera detectors, which have cost and versatility advantages over CZT.
- AGFA Lands NJ Enterprise Site: AGFA HealthCare signed a contract to install its cloud-based Enterprise Imaging Cloud software at Englewood Health in New Jersey. AGFA will be installing its EI Cloud, EI for Radiology, and EI for Cardiology suites, as well as its vendor-neutral archive and XERO universal viewer. Englewood processes about 400k medical images across its hospital and community-based imaging facilities.
- New GE Contrast Facility: GE HealthCare is investing $138M to build a new contrast manufacturing plant at its existing site in Cork, Ireland. The facility will be producing over 25M doses of contrast by 2027, enabling the company to meet expected demand growth for CT and X-ray contrast media.
- Micro-X to Focus on Medical CT: Australian X-ray developer Micro-X plans to focus exclusively on medical CT as it moves to deliver on a $14M ARPA-H contract to develop a lightweight full-body CT scanner for the U.S. government. With the shift, Micro-X said it will “monetize” its activities in the security industry through relationships with third parties. The company’s head CT scanner in development also produced its first images in December.
- Viz.ai Partners for Aneurysm AI: Viz.ai partnered with Softek Illuminate to improve detection of brain aneurysms. The companies will integrate the Viz Neuro Suite with Viz Aneurysm solution for analyzing CT angiography scans with Illuminate’s Discovery360 natural language processing technology for discovering at-risk aneurysm patients by reviewing EMR data.
- Behold.ai CEO Blames UK AI Fund: The CEO of U.K. AI developer Behold.ai – which entered insolvency proceedings last year – is blaming the company’s demise on the procurement process in the NHS’ AI Diagnostic Fund. In an interview with Digital Health, Simon Rasalingham said Behold.ai did not win any AIDF contracts, despite being the only British AI company applying for the funds. He accused the £21M fund of aiding overseas AI competitors rather than U.K. companies.
