“When I deployed my first AI tool in a hospital, I thought the hard part was getting the algorithm to work. Three years and multiple deployments across NHS and UAE health systems later, I know the algorithm is about 20% of the problem. The other 80% is everything no one warns you about.”

Our list of the best radiology news sources last year generated a lot of excitement, so we’re updating the list for 2026 with the people and publications we rely on to find the most interesting medical imaging stories.
Radiology has seen major changes in social media use since we last updated the list. - CT Lung Screening and Smoking: Smoking cessation guidance should be a key component of any CT lung cancer screening program, a point driven home in a new study in JAMA Network Open. Researchers in China screened 30.6k people, finding that among those with a negative baseline scan, smokers had nearly 3X the risk of lung cancer after three years compared to never-smokers (HR = 2.73). Risk began increasing at 20 pack-years of smoking, and female smokers had higher risk even with the same level of smoking exposure.
- Mixed Results with AI for Lung Screening: South Korean researchers using an AI algorithm from Coreline Soft for lung nodule analysis saw mixed results in a real-world CT lung cancer screening program in which AI was integrated into the PACS. In an AJR study with 911 patients, Aview Lung Nodule CAD did not produce a statistically significant difference in reading times per study (187 vs. 172 seconds, p = 0.23), but radiologists using AI had a higher nodule detection rate (17% vs. 10%).
- South Korea Lowers Lung Screening Starting Age: CT lung cancer screening has been hampered by overly restrictive inclusion criteria, so it’s big news this month that South Korea changed its guidelines to include more people. The country lowered the starting age from 54 to 50 (in line with U.S. guidelines) and will require a shorter smoking history, of 20 years. South Korea already has a relatively high lung screening participation rate of 52%, and their goal is to raise that to 58%-60% by 2030.
- Samsung’s Medical Imaging Rebrand: Samsung Medison is rebranding its U.S.-based medical imaging operations to unify them under a single brand. The company’s Boston Imaging and Neurologica businesses will now be known as Samsung Healthcare and Medical Equipment America. Samsung HME now includes ultrasound, digital radiography, and CT under a single integrated corporate structure that reflects Samsung’s global branding. The company recently launched the R20 and Z20 ultrasound scanners, and acquired ultrasound AI developer Sonio in 2024.
- Radiation Rules Relaxed? More details are emerging on the U.S. government’s plan to relax rules on occupational radiation exposure. The U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission in 2025 announced plans to change limits on radiation exposure, and a new story in Politico’s E&E News details the changes. The NRC would discontinue using the “as low as reasonably achievable” principle as well as the linear no-threshold model, and would increase the maximum radiation dose a medical provider can receive by 10X. A proposed rule is expected by April 30.
- Vendor Financial Results: The most recent financial reporting period wrapped up with imaging vendors reporting mostly positive growth. Revenues were reported for GE HealthCare Imaging and Advanced Visualization Solutions divisions (+6.4% to $4.077B), Siemens Healthineers Imaging division (+5.7% to $3.23B), Philips Diagnosis and Treatment division (+4% to $2.77B), Fujifilm healthcare division (+4.8% to $1.67B), Canon Medical Systems (+4.3% to $1.06B), Hologic Breast Health division (+0.8% to $376M), and the Varex medical division (+0% to $145M).
- FDA Issues Drag Down Guerbet Results: Ongoing FDA regulatory compliance issues at a contrast media production plant in Raleigh, North Carolina, weighed down Guerbet’s most recent financial results. Guerbet received an FDA warning letter in October 2025 after an inspection uncovered quality control and documentation issues. Guerbet is complying by modernizing equipment and processes, but lower shipments from the plant reduced fiscal 2025 revenue (-3.8% to $907.5M) and contributed to a net loss ($130M). As a result, Guerbet has a debt ratio exceeding its loan covenants, prompting auditors to issue a “going concern” warning.
- MedPAC Annual Report: The MedPAC Commission recommended a payment increase to physicians for 2027 in its annual report to Congress, but doctor pay in the Medicare Physician Fee Schedule will most likely drop next year due to expiration of a temporary 2.5% payment bump in 2025’s One Big Beautiful Bill Act. The net result is that MedPAC expects Medicare physician payments to fall 1.2% to 1.7% compared to 2026, a tough pill for many practices to swallow given rising costs.
- Function Connects to Microsoft Copilot Health: In an interesting wrinkle in the longevity medicine space, Function Health announced that its members will be able to connect their personal health data with Microsoft Copilot Health, the tech giant’s new AI-powered health assistant. Function offers its members lab tests and medical imaging scans (the company acquired Ezra last year), and said the Copilot Health link will help its members interpret their health questions in the context of their personal health records.
- Docs Adopt AI, but with Qualms: A new survey from Doximity shows AI making inroads with U.S. physicians. Across 3.2k physicians surveyed, 54% reported they were currently using AI in their practice, and 37% on a daily basis. But they are also cautious, with 71% citing concerns about the technology’s accuracy (but only 5% said they are not interested in AI at all). Among 15 specialties surveyed, neurologists had the highest AI adoption rate (64%), followed by gastroenterologists (61%) and internists (60%).
- Physician AI Use Doubles: Meanwhile, the AMA’s 2026 Physician Survey on Augmented Intelligence shows that AI use among doctors has doubled as confidence builds in the technology. The survey data found that more than four in five physicians (81%) are using AI in their practices, up from just 38% in 2023. The average number of use cases per physician now stands at 2.3 (up from 1.1 three years ago), with the most common uses of AI centered on medical research summarization and clinical care documentation.
- Merge Releases PACS Update: Merge has released the latest update of its flagship PACS software. Version 9.4 includes updates to improve efficiency and usability, and is available for Merge customers with either on-premises or cloud-based installations. Major features include smoother mammography reading with synchronized scrolling of prior images, better support for academic workflows with public, searchable study tags and batch processing of teaching files, and a modernized real-time worklist.
- New Clinical Guidelines for PE: The ACC and AHA, alongside eight other medical societies, released the first comprehensive clinical practice guidelines for acute pulmonary embolism. Central to the document is a new five-tier classification system (Categories A-E) to risk-stratify patients from asymptomatic to complete cardiopulmonary failure. The guidelines emphasize rapid diagnosis, the use of multidisciplinary PE response teams, and treatments ranging from anticoagulants for low-risk cases to catheter-based interventions and surgery for severe instability.
- HIMSS Reports Attendance of 24k: HIMSS reported attendance of 24k at its 2026 annual conference in Las Vegas. While that keeps HIMSS in the realm of the largest U.S. medical conferences, it continues a slow slide in attendance that’s persisted since the COVID-19 pandemic. Attendance at HIMSS 2025 (also Las Vegas) was estimated at 28k, while HIMSS 2024 in Orlando drew some 30k people. The last show before the pandemic – HIMSS 2019 – drew about 43k attendees to Orlando.
