VC Radiology Funding Drops, Streamlined AI Review, and Trump Scans January 5, 2026

|
Venture capital investment in radiology peaked in 2021 at just over $2B and has been on a slow decline since then. That’s according to a study in JACR that documents the ebb and flow of VC investment, in particular its shift to companies developing AI algorithms.
VC investment is the lifeblood of any industry built on innovation, and healthcare is no exception.
- Venture capital funding helps many innovators bring their ideas to fruition and helps fund them until revenue from product sales can start rolling in.
So it stands to reason that changes in VC funding levels can have ripple effects, with declines potentially affecting the rate of new technology development.
- Indeed, some studies have found that every 1% increase in interest rates can cause a 3% decline in R&D spending and a 9% drop in patent filings.
The new research tracks VC funding specifically in radiology, with researchers from Emory and Harvard universities using PitchBook to track VC investments from 2000 to 2023.
In particular, researchers found…
- A total of $11.4B was invested in 646 radiology companies during the entire study period.
- The average investment was $6.3M with an average $51M post-investment valuation.
- VC investment activity in radiology peaked in 2021 at $2.18B.
- Medical devices attracted 28% of investment, followed by AI healthcare software (22%), non-AI healthcare software (18%), healthcare services (14%), and biotechnology and drug discovery (18%).
The new data track with research from other sources – like Signify Research – that have also documented a slowdown in radiology VC investment, particularly in AI.
- Most sources attribute the declines to the end of the “cheap money” era during the COVID-19 pandemic as governments began dialing back on stimulus payments and started raising interest rates to tamp down inflation. On the other hand, other research has found that the recent declines are occurring at a rate that’s not proportional to inflation or interest rates alone.
The Takeaway
The new JACR research comes as the investment and healthcare worlds are set to begin their annual courtship ritual next week at the J.P. Morgan Healthcare Conference in San Francisco. Undoubtedly these new findings will be a point of discussion as radiology companies look to secure the capital that will fuel the next innovations in medical imaging.

- FDA Mulls Streamlined AI Review: The FDA is considering a petition filed by AI developer Harrison.ai that would streamline how it reviews AI-powered medical devices. Harrison is requesting a new regulatory pathway in which companies that have already received AI-related 510(k) clearances could comply with post-market requirements rather than submit regulatory applications for every new product. The pathway would benefit developers with multiple AI algorithms, for whom filing multiple 510(k)s presents regulatory and financial burdens. The FDA is taking comments on the petition.
- SHINE Acquires Lantheus SPECT Business: Radiopharmaceutical company SHINE completed its acquisition of Lantheus’ SPECT radiotracer business. First announced in May 2025, the acquisition includes flagship SPECT tracers like the technetium-99m cardiac imaging tracers TechneLite and Cardiolite, as well as Neurolite for brain imaging and xenon gas for pulmonary imaging. The new business has been branded as SHINE SPECT USA with nuclear medicine veteran Michael Rossi joining as CEO. The divestiture enables Lantheus to continue focusing on its PET radiotracer business.
- Trump Scans Baffle Radiologists: President Donald Trump raised a minor controversy over the New Year’s holiday with a statement about advanced imaging he’s received. Trump said the scan he got in October was a CT study, not an MRI as originally reported. His personal physician implied the scan was a screening exam to rule out cardiovascular issues and was normal, but some medical experts raised questions about the medical necessity of the scans.
- ACS Report Confirms Cancer Disparities: An American Cancer Society report confirms that socioeconomic disparities play a major role in cancer incidence and mortality. Researchers found that cancer mortality is higher for Black and Indian American/Alaska Native males than White men (14% and 13% higher, respectively), with similar disparities for women (10% and 22% higher). Education also played a role: compared to people with college degrees, both men and women with high school or lower degrees had higher mortality rates (2.6X and 2X for males and females, respectively).
- Plaque Analysis Guidelines: Medicare on January 1 began paying for AI analysis of coronary plaque on CCTA scans under a Category 1 CPT code, and that’s spurring new interest in the technology. To guide clinical use, ACC and AHA issued guidelines on quantitative coronary plaque analysis, including clinical indications, how AI outputs should be reviewed, and what should be included in quantitative plaque reports (identifying the software is a requirement). The guidelines should benefit vendors with FDA-cleared plaque analysis software, including Heartflow, Cleerly, Elucid, Caristo, Artrya, and Circle CVI.
- Unified PET Accreditation Standard: A coalition of global nuclear medicine societies have joined forces to adopt a single unified standard for PET accreditation. Participants include SNMMI-CTN, ARTnet, and EANM, who have agreed to adopt an accreditation system based on contrast recovery coefficients to replace the current SUV recovery coefficient standard. That’s a mouthful, but it’s important because a unified standard will streamline PET/CT and PET/MRI protocols for clinical trial sponsors and CROs, reducing costs for phantom testing and harmonizing performance criteria worldwide.
- Qure Scores Canadian AI Deployment: Qure.ai received a contract to deploy its AI algorithms at Horizon Health Network in New Brunswick, Canada. Horizon is planning to roll out a low-dose CT lung cancer screening program across the province, and Qure’s solutions will help it manage patients in the program as well as help detect incidental cases on chest X-rays. Horizon operates 12 hospitals and over 100 medical facilities in the province.
- Better Kidney CT with AI: An AI algorithm from Better Medicine of Estonia performed well in analyzing CT scans for kidney cancer. In a new study in Nature Communications Medicine, researchers tested the BMVision algorithm’s impact on radiologist interpretations of 200 CT scans. The algorithm boosted sensitivity for detecting renal lesions (from 80% to 86%) and also reduced reporting time by an average of 33% thanks to auto-generated structured reports. Better Medicine raised €1M earlier this year to commercialize BMVision, which has the CE Mark.
- Deep Learning for Abdominal CT: A deep learning CT image reconstruction algorithm developed by Canon Medical Systems for coronary CT angiography also works well for abdominal imaging. In a new paper in Physica Medica, researchers tested the PIQE algorithm on both phantoms and five patients. Radiologists gave the PIQE images higher median image quality scores than other reconstruction techniques, especially for small abdominal arteries, and it also scored favorably on the phantom studies.
- AI for Prostate MRI Falls Short: AI could make prostate cancer screening viable by helping radiologists interpret MRI scans of suspicious lesions. But a homegrown AI algorithm used in a Swedish prostate screening trial fell short in a study in European Radiology. For 1.3k men, AI had an AUROC of 0.83, and its specificity for PI-RADS 3 lesions was sharply lower than radiologists (0.54 vs. 0.76), indicating more false positives. The results differ from the more positive findings in the PI-CAI study.
- Sectra Launches Reporting in U.S. Add Sectra to the list of companies offering radiology reporting solutions in the U.S. Sectra Reporting unifies image review with reporting in a single workflow, enabling radiologists to do their jobs without switching between applications. The company said it was leveraging its previous experience selling reporting software in Europe to enter the U.S. market, which it sees as being dominated by “legacy reporting solutions.”
- Plaque Burden Matters: Cleerly presented research at CVCT 2025 from the CONFIRM2 Registry showing that its AI-based plaque analysis can identify high-risk patients with non-obstructive coronary artery disease. The 6.5k patient study found that those with non-obstructive disease but high plaque burden (over 750mm³) had major cardiac event rates comparable to or exceeding patients with severe blockages. The findings suggest total plaque burden throughout the heart drives risk independent of blockage severity, which could change cardiac risk assessment approaches.
- Flywheel Debuts Data Platform: Flywheel debuted a new version of its clinical trial data management platform that streamlines imaging workflow and improves data access for researchers. Flywheel Validated is a new version of the company’s core technology platform designed to enable researchers to analyze clinical trial imaging data more efficiently while maintaining regulatory compliance and trial integrity.
- Shimadzu’s New X-Ray Systems: Shimadzu Medical Systems USA launched several new X-ray systems, ranging from a new mobile C-arm to a new version of the company’s flagship interventional angiography system. SC15 is a mobile C-arm with a flat-panel detector and 43-inch monitor optimized for orthopedic surgery, while Shimadzu’s Trinias angiography system received an update with the SCORE Opera ST version. The new configuration includes voice recognition for system positioning as well as a subscription model for new features.
