“Let’s make one thing clear, GE aren’t buying a PACS company, they’re buying an entire Imaging Ecosystem!”

AI is no longer being viewed as a diagnostic aid but as essential medical infrastructure. Nowhere is that more apparent than in CT lung cancer screening, with Germany and other European Union countries embedding AI into their screening programs. This evolution will be on display at RSNA 2025, where Coreline Soft will introduce its chest AI platform AVIEW 2.0.

In what could be the biggest radiology IT acquisition in years, GE HealthCare will acquire medical image management software company Intelerad in a purchase valued at $2.3B. The acquisition will bolster GE’s position in the outpatient image management segment, which is rapidly shifting from on-premises PACS models to cloud-based environments.
Intelerad was founded in Montreal in 1999 as a PACS developer and has grown through acquisitions of its own in recent years.
- U.K. private equity firm Hg took a controlling interest in Intelerad in 2020, and the company soon embarked on a series of acquisitions that rolled up smaller imaging IT companies like Digisonics (2020), Ambra Health (2021), Insignia (2021), Lumedx (2021), Life Image (2022), and PenRad Technologies (2022).
After taking a few years to digest the new companies, Intelerad began focusing on moving its technology and customers to cloud-based architecture, such as by releasing a cloud-native version of its InteleHeart software and by moving its PACS, VNA, and image-sharing applications to AWS cloud hosting.
GE needs no introduction, of course, but the company clearly sees the attraction of Intelerad’s core market in outpatient imaging, which complements GE’s focus on larger hospitals and health systems.
In a conversation with The Imaging Wire, Scott Miller, president and CEO, Solutions for Enterprise Imaging at GE HealthCare, explained several of the acquisition’s advantages …
- Imaging exams are moving from hospitals to outpatient centers due to lower costs.
- Outpatient facilities are following hospitals in moving their data to the cloud, putting Intelerad at the intersection of two major trends.
- Intelerad’s geographic focus has been on English-speaking countries, giving GE the opportunity to plug Intelerad products into its international distribution network.
GE estimates that Intelerad will generate $270M in revenue in its first full year under GE ownership.
- Intelerad’s sales have been growing at a rate in the low double digits, and GE expects that pace to accelerate.
Is the new acquisition a sign of growing consolidation in the radiology AI and image management sectors?
- Other recent purchases in 2025 include Radiology Partners’ purchase of Cognita Imaging, Lunit’s acquisition of Prognosia, and GE’s own purchase of icometrix, completed earlier this month. RadNet also acquired iCAD earlier in the year.
The Takeaway
GE’s acquisition of Intelerad offers multiple benefits to the multimodality OEM, from Intelerad’s presence in the outpatient imaging sector to its experience in cloud-based image management and broad product portfolio. The question is whether the purchase spurs other big iron vendors to answer with acquisitions of their own.

- CT Lung Guidelines Miss Patients: Another study has found that lung cancer screening criteria based on current guidelines are missing at-risk patients. In a paper in JAMA Network Open, researchers looked at almost 1k patients diagnosed with lung cancer from 2018 to 2023, finding that only 35% met USPSTF criteria, with women and never-smokers often excluded. Expanding the criteria to 40-85 years of age, 10 or more pack-years of smoking, and no limit due to smoking cessation would boost the rate to 62%.
- Essential AI for Lung Cancer Screening: AI is no longer being viewed as a diagnostic aid but as essential medical infrastructure. Nowhere is that more apparent than in CT lung cancer screening, with Germany and other European Union countries embedding AI into their screening programs. Many are turning to Coreline Soft’s AI solutions, and at RSNA 2025 the company will introduce the latest version of its chest AI platform, AVIEW 2.0.
- Lung Cancer Stage Shift: A New York City hospital saw a sharp reversal in late-stage lung cancer cases since adopting a lung screening and nodule follow-up program. Montefiore Einstein Comprehensive Cancer Center serves the Bronx community, which prior to the program had higher lung cancer mortality rates than other NYC boroughs. But since 2021, the hospital has seen its rate of late-stage diagnoses fall (53% to 34%) while stage I diagnoses grew (26% to 45%), a classic example of a screening stage shift.
- Comments Due on FDA’s GenAI Regulation: The deadline is fast approaching to submit comments on the FDA’s plan to regulate generative AI for real-world medical use. The agency is examining its GenAI regulatory approach and addressed the topic at the inaugural meeting of its Digital Health Advisory Committee in November 2024. The FDA wants to develop ways to monitor GenAI performance after algorithms have been approved and are in clinical use. Comments are due by December 1.
- TeraRecon’s AI Investment: Advanced visualization software developer TeraRecon released a new version of its 3D software while revealing a new investment in the AI market. TeraRecon AV is a cloud-based application with new features that automate previously manual tasks, including for cardiac interventional procedures. The company will show UnityVue, the product of its alliance with NewVue that unifies viewer and worklist, as well as its Enterprise Imaging Platform running on the AWS HealthImaging cloud. Mach7 will also launch an intelligent AI application developed through its partnership with Strings that includes predictive analytics and workflow automation.
- NewVue Updates Cockpit Software: Radiology workflow software developer NewVue updated its Radiologist Cockpit solution. The new release includes clinical summaries, prior-report comparisons, and workflow enhancements, and NewVue notes that the solution can run on top of an imaging practice’s existing technology stack, giving providers better workflow orchestration without having to remove their legacy PACS.
- California Startup Voio Emerges from Stealth: An AI startup spun out of UC Berkeley and UC San Francisco emerged from stealth with $8.6M in seed funding and an open-source foundation AI model called Pillar-0. Voio is building a unified reading platform that can recognize hundreds of clinical conditions from CT and MRI exams, and is touting Pillar-0’s performance compared to models from Google and Microsoft, with an AUC of 0.87 for over 350 findings. Voio executives previously contributed to other well-known AI models like Mirai and Sybil.
